The Best Basketball Shoes For Ankle Support Guide in 2018

Under Armour Curry 3 Review

best basketball shoes for ankle support 2018This is known as the Steph Curry option. Steph endorses for Under Armour and they have clearly shown the ability to create high quality shoes that also give extra ankle support. Steph usually uses mid-top Under Armour shoes combined with these Zamst ankle braces for maximum ankle protection.

These shoes off fantastic support for ankles because they are just designed with very high quality material that surround your foot. Under Armour claims their Curry shoes are a “second skin” for your feet, and we believe that to be quite accurate. Another important area for ankle support is the quality of fit. Shoes need to be snug, but not suffocating, for your feet and ankles to have great support while cutting hard in basketball. These Curry 3 shoes deliver just that.

The last important area to consider with shoes for ankle support is traction. Nothing is more frustrating in basketball than making a hard cut but having your shoe slip underneath you. That’s nearly always a rolled ankle. The Curry 3s gives you the supremely fantastic multi-directional herringbone traction design for great traction and minimal slipping.

Think about it for one second. Steph Curry has a history of ankle injuries. This is his model and style (the shoes and ankle brace) that got him to back-to-back MVPs with no issues. That should say enough.

The only downside about these shoes is they don’t “breathe” and ventilate well. Your feet will most likely heat up quickly in these shoes and that can sometimes lead to blisters if you play for long periods of time. Keep that in mind. You can see even more about these shoes here on Amazon.

Under Armour Drive 4

best basketball shoes for ankle support 2018It shouldn’t come as a surprise that #1 and #2 on our list are Under Armour. That company has made some major improvements and headway in the basketball sneaker world and people are noticing. This Drive 4 shoe shoe is an amazing balance between all the most important elements in ankle support. It has a cage design built around the midsole to prevent ankles from rolling after hard stops. This cage is still lightweight and yet can provide support with the best of them.

If you remember the ClutchFit model Under Armour had rolling out a few years ago, this is the “rebranding” of that model under a new name. The ClutchFit model made several best quality lists on our sit. So it shouldn’t be a surprise the rebirth would too.

The shoe fit is another category this shoe does very well in. Under Armour has truly learned how to create shoes that can mold to your feet and feel like it’s always been a true part of the foot. The wrap-around ankle mouth of the shoe only gives you more comfort in knowing that there is material surrounding those ankles. Lastly, the traction on this shoe is tried-and-true herringbone design. That is the baseline for good traction that is always reliable.

Again, nothing fancy about Under Armour’s design of traction on the shoe, but you don’t need fancy, you just need results. The one upside to these Under Armour shoes compared to the above Curry’s is that these Drive scored much better in ventilating your foot. You won’t get nearly as hot in these shoes. Nike LeBron Soldier XI

best basketball shoes with ankle supportThis shoes definitely showcases what Nike can do when they put their mind to creating a fanstic fitting and supportive shoe. The LeBron Soldier XI steps up the game for pretty much all Nike shoes and absolutely earn their spot on our list of the best basketball shoes for ankle support. The unique design of the traction on the bottom works quite well as you cut and drive.

The shoes even worked well in outdoor basketball without losing a lot of traction coming back inside. That is impressive!

The two most common times people roll ankles is cutting and falling on someone. While we can’t stop people from falling, these shoes provide unbelievable protection from cutting and falling.

The shoe fit and ankle support are on the border of legendary for Nike shoes. The Soldier’s lock down your foot more than other shoes thanks to the velcro straps you can tighten to your liking. The tighter the better for support. These straps do such an amazing job keeping your foot exactly in the correct place within the shoe to always have maximum support.

Another nice piece is the wider base which gives greater stability. There’s nothing players with weak ankles love more than stability. And these Soldier shoes provide that stable feel.

Every direction of your ankle is covered with these Soldier’s and it’ll be very difficult to roll an ankle in these bad boys. However, it never hurts to add an ankle brace because shoes can’t stop everything. You can see more about these LeBron Soldier’s here at Amazon.

Nike HyperDunk 2017

top ankle support basketball shoes 2018The HyperDunk is a staple in the Nike world of basketball shoes. They typically come out with a new version every year and this 2017 version definitely qualifies for high ankle support.

This HyperDunk has a very unique and wavy traction pattern that we see in several shoes giving great support from sliding. It also has several central points on the traction to deliver the feeling of suitability when you take off and drive to the hoop, no matter which direction you come from. And as we mentioned before, traction can (and usually does) play an important roll in preventing ankle injuries.

The materials on this version of the HyperDunk are solid like so many models of Hyperdunk before it. We like to call the Hyperdunks “ol’ reliable” because they’re always great shoes. No gimmicks, no frills, no big names attached. Just a solid shoe top to bottom.

The shoe fits very nicely pretty much all around your foot. You should feel good solid lockdown when you get these on. Again, nothing fancy just good lacing system combined with a basic upper portion. Beyond that, you’ll enjoy how securely your foot feels inside as long as you have pretty normal feet.

If you have wider feet, it might be worth considering going up by a 1/2 size. You can see even more about these HyperDunk 2017’s here on Amazon.

Adidas D Rose 8

best basketball shoes with straps 2018This is the shoes that was made for ankle braces. Derrick Rose has had quite a few injuries over the years and Adidas has learned to adapt with him.

Rose now wears ankle braces occasionally and these shoes show the creativity of Adidas for ankle conscious players.

The shoe itself also provides solid support all around. It’s got all the features you want and need in a stable shoe. Heel counter… check. Torsional plate… check. Wide lateral cage to contain the foot… check. It’s as stable as they come.

Adidas has a unique traction design, but it was a slight letdown. If the traction was a little better, this D Rose shoe probably would’ve been our top choice. But Adidas tried something new with the traction and I’m sure we’ll see them return to what works in the next model.

The shoe fits pretty well compared to your size. It’s not perfect for everyone, but should be OK for wide foot players too. What makes the shoe do well in this category is lockdown. The lace system works extremely well and really secures the foot in place.

Overall, the shoe feels really nice and you’ll enjoy it more as you continue to wear it. Our recommendation is to wear these with braces though. Our recommended brace is still Steph Curry’s preferred choice of the Zamst brace here. You can find more info about these D Rose 8 shoes here on Amazon.

Ektio Alexio Ankle Support Shoe (Sorry but this shoe was discontinued in late 2016)

best basketball shoes for ankle supportWelcome the brand you’ve probably never heard of, but you’ll be glad you did now. These shoes are actually designed and built with one objective: prevent ankle injuries. And boy do they do a darn great job at that. Without question, these shoes provide the most stable ankle protection of any on the list thanks to that locking strap you see. It surrounds your foot like a steel trap and does an amazing job keeping your ankle protected if you fall awkwardly.

The traction on these shoes is also near legendary. Their advanced herringbone traction design has deeper grooves than most shoes and they practically repel dust so you don’t have to wipe constantly. Traction and support are the two areas that Ektio does extremely well. Professional shoe reviewers who have gotten Ektio’s all agree on those two aspects.

However, it’s the cushioning and comfort where you make some sacrifices with Ektio. Not to say it’s bad cushioning and comfort, but compared to the shoes on the list, these are definitely in last place for comfort. But don’t be discouraged because these shoes still have some decent cushion so you don’t feel like you’re playing on cement shoes. You just need to know that these shoes are the best in support, but you give a little in comfort. If you want the best support and are willing to live with that, these are top-of-the-line and definitely belong on the best basketball shoes for ankle support list. You can find more on the Ektio shoes here on Amazon.

Our Recommendation

So if we had to choose just one shoe from our list to play with… We would choose the Curry 3s. It has the best blend of everything we want and need in ankle supporting basketball shoes.

You want traction. The Curry’s have it.

You need good fitting shoes. The Curry’s fit extremely well to size.

You want great support and stability. The Curry’s are fantastic which is to be expected given the athlete.

The next best choice would probably be the Nike Hyperdunks. They come in slightly better in price for those who need it. And they are pretty good in every category also.

So there’s our top 2 choices to hopefully help anyone and every choose what works for them. Just remember, it’s not about the “high collar” anymore. Now big features for ankle stability include lockdown, fit and support structures built throughout the shoe.

What Makes A Basketball Shoe Have Good Support?

This is a tough question to answer specifically, because many shoes accomplish it differently. Here’s what we know is a tried and true method in case you’re confused. But remember, this isn’t the only way.

First, you want a shoe with a rock solid TPU shank. The TPU shank basically gives the shoe structure. It’s like the steel frame of a car. The stronger the frame, the better the car will perform in a crash. So to help prevent ankle injuries, basketball shoes should have a TPU shank built to last.

Second, they should have an excellent lacing system for the shoes. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve watched a guy roll an ankle because he didn’t lace his shoes up properly. Having a good lacing system will increase the chances someone laces their shoes all the way tight.

Third, buy a shoe that fits to size. Shoes that are slightly bigger than your feet give room to move. That dead space is going to be a problem if you slip because your shoe will stop but your feet will keep moving slightly. Hence, the rolled ankle. Make sure to try shoes on if possible.

The Wrap Up

Now you have seen the list of the best basketball shoes for ankle support. Remember, sometimes it’s best to go try on a pair and see how they fit for you and your feet. We are only giving our opinion based on our tests and research. However, these shoes will definitely go a long way in preventing major ankle injuries. Best of luck on the court!
